U23 Women Provide Compelling Competition at Tropical 7s

The Women's U23 Elite bracket at the Tropical 7s produced plenty of impressive play and some drama.

While many of the teams in attendance showed flashes, the top four clearly seemed to be Harvard, Lindenwood, Life, and Dartmouth.

All four have two teams at Tropical, with Harvard and Dartmouth putting their 2nd sides in the U23 Open division, and Lindenwood and Life rounding out the U23 Elite bracket with their seconds.

The firsts were pretty good. A young Harvard was very effective at winning restarts and, even when they didn't, putting defensive pressure on the opposition. That would usually result in a turnover and, as often as not, a couple of quick passes out to Victoria Stanley for a try. Cameron Fields was very good at the restart; Brogan Mior ran the midfield well, and freshman Lennox London was aggressive, fast, and dangerous.

The Life 1st side played as Life Black. They played very hard-nosed defense and made it difficult on any team to break through. Then when the Running Eagles got a sniff, they were gone.

Dartmouth's game was clearly to dominate the field position, and with the leadership from Sophie Ragg as well as some exceptional playmaking from Kristin Bitter, the Big Green scored the most points in the bracket and allowed the second-fewest.

Lindenwood Gold won well against Army 27-5, and shut out Life's second side 36-0. But the big game was against Harvard. In that game the Crimson did their thing, forced penalties, spun the ball, and scored two excellent tries.

But Lindenwood didn't wilt. Instead they decided to improve their discipline, and with the ball in hand Makenna Bailey worked hard to break through tackles. They offloaded well and with Taina Tukuafu, Demi Allen, and Amy Brice running well together and in support they hauled Harvard in and ended up winning 22-12.

So that sets up quarterfinals with Dartmouth vs Life Green, Lindenwood Black vs Harvard, Army vs Life Black, and Lindenwood Gold vs Long Island.

Long Island was hit by some key injuries which didn't help them. But at least they found the tryline, while a young Life Green team was shut out three times and will be up against it in their quarterfinal.

Lindenwood Black competed well, scored against both Life Black and Dartmouth before beating LIU. Army was probably the best team outside the top four, holding both Lindenwood and Harvard fairly close, especially in the first half.
