Two Rivalry Results: Regis Jesuit vs Palmer, STA vs KC

Regis Jesuit defeated Palmer HS in convincing fashion on Wednesday evening 51-19 to improve to 4-0 in the Colorado Interscholastic Rugby Association.

It was a impressive showing by Regis, but Head Coach Anthony Mattacchione said the score somewhat flattered his team. Palmer, he said. ""are a physical team and the wear and tear of 70 minutes showed on both sides."

Abe Kamara led the Palmer side well at flyhalf and continues to put in good performances for them. Regis Jesuit hooker Matthew Sanchez was excellent while David Doty scored two tries at center and was responsible for setting up several more.

Regis and Palmer actually meet up again on Tuesday in a makeup of a game that was scheduled May 1. Then Saturday Palmer finished up against Valor Christian and Regis takes on Monarch.

Not all that far away from Denver, St. Thomas Aquinas took on perennial rivals Kansas City Junior Blues. STA had started their season very well and continued to show good form. KC started slowly, but has steadily improved, and it showed as the two teams entered halftime tied 12-12.

"It was a really, really hard game," said Aquinas Head Coach Tim Kluempers. "A lot of back-and-forth, a lot of good rugby. Both teams fought their butts off."

With the game tied Aquinas got the game-winner off some defensive pressure leading to a turnover and try under the posts. The Blues had an opportunity to come back, and with time up received a penalty right in front of the posts. They tapped quickly, but a knock-on ended the game.

Leading the way for Aquinas was Ryan Yankovich, who was excellent in the lineout and powering ahead with ball in hand. Center Brock Kluempers had another strong performance, especially in poaching ball in the breakdown as well as distributing to his fellow backs.
