Two Big Wins For Iowa State

Iowa State was named one of FloRugby's potential breakout DI college teams, and things have been going well for the team so far.

ISU beat Iowa two weekends ago 43-0, getting four tries from center Joe Dillon, and two from scrumhalf Emmett Wagner.

Iowa is a young team and Iowa State broke them open late.

And then this past weekend, the Cyclones beat Oklahoma 43-7.

Between those two games, ISU Head Coach, Matt Brotherton, stepped down, and Ant Frein took over. It was a shakeup for the team to say the least, and yet they kept going.

Frein wasn't surprised.

"The only thing I'd really add is that the improvement has been linked to the numbers we've had practice. We have 45 players right now and the competition in practice has improved play dramatically and it's also created an extremely close family culture in the program," said Frein.

It was all in evidence as the Cyclones put aside the heat and humidity and took the game to the Sooners.

The first ten minutes was back and forth, but then Dillon got things going with a crossfield kick that was grabbed by the sprinting Emmanuel Taban, who touched down for the try. From that point on the game was taken over by Iowa State dominating the breakdown and strong Iowa State forward play.

Iowa State had worked hard on offloads during their bye week and it showed. Oklahoma never seemed to be able to counterruck because of the constant offloads and players taking the ball through the gainline at pace. On the defensive side, IowaState turned defense into attack and any time there was a breakaway, fullback Brennan Drea cleaned up the mess. The Iowa State pack played a dominant game and opened up plenty of space for the backline to exploit the Oklahoma's backs. The game was sloppy towards the end, but Iowa State came out with a decisive victory over a strong Oklahoma program.

Drea and the entire pack were named players of the game, and six different players scored tries - Drea got two of them.

Iowa State opens conference play this coming weekend versus Washington University in Saint Louis.
