Tri-State Latest - Molloy Wins Big One

Molloy gets the ball moving against Seton Hall.

Molloy College defeated Seton Hall 28-19 Saturday to move to 4-0 in the Tri-State Men’s DII Conference, and taking comment of the Tri-State South.

Molloy had started strong in part because so many players were able to get together during the summer because they live nearby. But this weekend was a little different in that they faced 2-0 Seton Hall, and needed to win to have thoughts of finishing 1st in the South division.

“We're still putting everything together,” said Molloy co-captain Steven Mallinowski. “We did not play perfect rugby [last week] against William Patterson and we had a lot to clean up.

Vinny DiLorenzo continues to play superbly as a hard-working forward who can win lineouts, get work done in the rucks, and make tackles.

But this week Molloy was also able to handle a team that was able to score on them. While North leads Vassar Brewers were idle, Marist moved to 2-0 with a tough 12-5 win over Union. In the South, Sacred Heart is now 3-0 after what appears to be a forfeit win.

Some key games are coming up. On October 3 it’s RPI against Union in a major rivalry game for those two schools - RPI sits at 1-1 and can start thinking about bigger things if the Engineers win.

On Sunday, the rest of the conference gets involved. The big game will be undefeated Vassar hosting undefeated Marist. Sacred Heart has a tough game at NJIT, while Molloy shouldn’t have too much trouble with SUNY New Paltz.

All eyes should be on October 18 when Molloy visits Sacred Heart in a game that will likely decide who wins the South.
