Tracking Overseas Pros

Andrew Durutalo is the USA player on the hottest streak at the moment.

With the recent release of the new Elite Training Squad for the USA Men's 15s program, it's time to have a look at who is in-form in competitions we don't see very often, namely, the overseas leagues.

First off, the key changes. In case you didn't see it, Chris Wyles remains a main player for Saracens, but has retired from playing 15s for the Eagles, and has only made himself available for the USA 7s team in the hopes of making the Olympics. Wyles has been in terrific form for Saracens. He's been playing very well, and did so in the Saracens win over London Irish in New Jersey, but didn't play this past weekend only because he was being rested.

Scott LaValla (Budd Bay U19s, Trinity) retired from professional rugby and is back home preparing for a new non-rugby career.

Hayden Smith (Metro State) is still playing for Saracens, but has retired from the Eagles.

Taku Ngwenya (Plano U19s, Dallas University) did all he could to keep an imploding Biarritz side going, but finally it's time to move. Ngwenya is going to be playing for the San Diego pro club back in the USA. This will be Ngwenya's first domestic rugby effort since 2007.

Nick Civeta, (University of Notre Dame, Cal) who was playing with Medicei in Italy has moved back to the USA to play pro in Ohio.

Tom Bliss has left Wasps to play for the pro team in San Diego.

Now, on to the top players at the top clubs

Andrew Durutalo. Durutalo has been arguably the best player for the Sunwolves, one of the new teams in the Super Rugby competition. While the Sunwolves have lost their opening five games in the competition, Durutalo, starting at openside flanker, has been one of the main reasons they have been so close to winning. The Sunwolves have notched two close-loss bonus points and in their last four games have recorded losses by 5, 3, and 1 point.

AJ MacGinty. The USA flyhalf has been playing regularly for Connacht, and in fact the frequency of his starting in the #10 jersey has been a bit of a surprise given that he is not eligible to play for Ireland (anymore). It has been, overall, a good season for MacGinty, although he took a while to get his eye in on his goalkicking. MacGinty will be done at Connacht at the end of the season, the club confirmed Monday.

Titi Lamositele (Chuckanut U19s). The Eagle prop has been in very good form for Saracens and continues to get valuable minutes, usually from the bench.

Blaine Scully (Cal) continues to start regularly for the Cardiff Blues, usually at wing. He has been playing very well, as is expected, and the only reason he was not used last week was because Cardiff expected to win without him.

James Hiltebrand has been named captain of the Manly club in the Sydney area in Australia, and has been called up to the Waratahs Super Rugby squad at hooker, and so will likely be bouncing back and forth between the two. It's a nice promotion for "Cecil."

Todd Clever (College Park U19s, UN-Reno). The longtime USA loose forward has not played for the Newcastle Falcons first side since February. He's still there, waiting to contribute to a team that is struggling.

Eric Fry (Jesuit-Sacramento, Cal). The USA prop hasn't suited up for Newcastle since he returned from Eagles duty.
Christian Ostberg is with the Stade Aurillac development squad and is getting some minutes with them.

Cam Dolan (Naples U19s, Life). The USA loose forward/ock played his first game for the Cardiff Blues since January 22 on March 18. Those last two games constituted more minutes (150) than he had played in the previous five games combined.  Samu Manoa has been inured and hasn't played for Toulon for almost three months. He should be back in May.

Greg Peterson has been playing regularly for the Glasgow Warriors in the Pro 12. The second row forward was not used in the last two Glasgow games, but is expected to be playing soon. He's an effective and valued part of the team.Dublin University's team, Trinity, has nine USA-eligible players playing at various levels, including capped wing/center Tim Maupin, and former USA age-grader Conor Kearns and former Middlebury All American Jake Feury. Oisin Brady, Ruadhan Magee, Patrick Thackery, Will Ben Sims, Chip Broderick, and Jim Sweeney are all playing with Trinity.
