Tours, Tests in College Rugby This Week

What can UC Davis do this week? David Barpal photo.

More than 25 college rugby teams are in action this weekend, with a little bit of an international flair.

Saint Mary's is on a tour that sees them play Cambridge University on Sunday, Oxford University on Wednesday, and Dublin University (aka Trinity) on next Saturday. Cambridge has several teams they field and are listing this fixture as a game for their 1st team.

Central Washington, meanwhile, is traveling to scenic Bellingham, Wash. to play Western Washington and also Trinity Western out of British Columbia.

"We are excited to get on the road again this week and get everyone in our roster invaluable playing time against two well-coached teams," said Central Washington Head Coach Todd Thornley, who saw his side beat University of British Columbia last week. "There are plenty of learnings we can apply from last week in both games and we are looking forward to the opportunity to apply those learnings under pressure on Saturday. Only our best effort will suffice against two excellent teams so we are under no illusions how well we must prepare this week."

Red River's D1A season kicks off with a nice slate of games highlights by Oklahoma at Texas A&M. The D1A California Conference, if we're being brutally honest, is a fight for 2nd because Saint Mary's is so strong. UC Davis did fairly well in their game (a loss) against Saint Mary's two weeks ago and UC Santa Cruz, despite going 0-3 at the Storer Classic, were a close 0-3.

Another few California Conference teams host out-of-conference visitors. Cal goes to UC Santa Barbara, which will be a tough test for the Gauchos. Cal Poly hosts DIAA team Chico State, and that's am abrasive contest after the Mustangs were beaten well by Saint Mary's last week. And San Diego State hosts Utah, which has a very tough schedule that includes Cal, Arizona, BYU, and UCLA.

After a bit of a surprising opening weekend the Florida DIAA league continues.

Surprises Mark Florida College Opening Weekend

Florida at Florida State is always a good rivalry in any sport and this week it's the Gators who come in 1-0 and defending conference champs Florida State licking their wounds a bit. There is still plenty to play for in that conference.
