Torrey Pines defeated Cathedral Catholic 46-7 in SoCal's Varsity Red league, pulling off an excellent display against a very good Cathedral team.

With an undefeated league record on the line, Torrey Pines needed to play well against Cathedral, and they did, hardly putting a foot wrong against their San Diego-area rivals.

Torrey Pines is a large public school with an excellent sports record across the board. Cathedral is a well-funded private school less than three miles away, and whose football team just won the state championship.

In rugby, however, Torrey Pines has been on a roll the last few years, and in this game the Falcons received the kickoff and put in three tries just like that. Using their forwards, Torrey Pines marched down the field and surged over for a 7-0 lead. Receiving the next two restarts, once again Torrey Pines kept the ball, and just wore down the Cathedral defense.

Midway through the first half, scrumhalf Beau Morgans was streaking down the right sideline, having broken through the Don defense. He covered about 30 meters, and while the Cathedral fullback had the angle, Morgans had four teammates in support. The scrumhalf weighed his options, and at full pace sent a pass that skipped past two teammates and into the hands of flanker Caleb Wilson, who tucked it in and went the remaining 50 meters right down the center of the field for the try.

That was the best try of a good day for Torrey Pines. And while the Falcons were penalized heavily in the game, and had two consecutive yellow cards during one 20-minute period, they held on. Cathedral HS All American Ryan James scored the Dons' lone try, but the Falcons did well to come up quickly on the Cathedral backline and deny him the chance to get too much ball.

"Things went our way early, and we held the lead despite a bit of unraveling," said Torrey Pines Head Coach Matty Sandoval. "We're going to need to a full game's effort to have a chance against LCC.”

That would be La Costa Canyon, which also won, putting both teams at 4-0 with one more week of league play to go.
