Former Central Washington Head Coach Todd Thornley has signed on with UCLA as the team's Forwards and Defense Coach.

Thornley, who left CWU after the team's varsity funding was pulled, has also served as the USA U19 Head Coach. He moves to LA and will also work with the California Legion MLR team.

Under his leadership, CWU produced five USA Eagles, 15 Major League Rugby (MLR) players, and the 2025 Rudy Scholz Award winner, the nation's top collegiate rugby honor, which was awarded to Oscar Treacy this past June.

Thornley has also been heavily involved in the USA Rugby High Performance Pathway, serving as Head Coach of the USA U19s and Assistant Coach for the USA U20s.

His national team experience also includes stints as Head Coach of the USA U23s and Assistant Coach for the USA Selects in the World Rugby Americas-Pacific Challenge.

A native of New Zealand, Thornley brings a rich background in performance science and player development. He holds a Master of Science in Exercise Science from Central Washington University and degrees in Physical Education and Conditioning from the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic.

His coaching philosophy blends technical precision, tactical awareness, and a deep commitment to athlete growth both on and off the field.

"Todd's track record speaks for itself," said UCLA Head Coach Harry Bennett. "He's developed world-class players, built winning cultures, and brings a tremendous depth of rugby knowledge. We're excited to welcome him to Westwood and confident he'll have a major impact on our forward pack and defensive systems."

Thornley's appointment strengthens UCLA's goals of challenging in D1A at the highest level. He also will coach with the Legion in the late spring and summer.
