Tight Games the Norm for Pa SS Teams

It seems like it's a tight league in Rugby Pennsylvania's Single-School leagues (they have three, Red, White, and Blue), and this is especially true in the White, where two games each came down to a single point.

In one, Cumberland Valley, the defending state champs, won 18-17 over Conestoga. In the other, Unionville edged Bishop Shanahan 25-24.

US Sports Camps 2015 Ad"It was the best match I've been associated with as a coach," enthused Joe Baker, the former Penn State All American who took over coaching of Unionville from his father, Curt, a season ago. "With that game and the Cumberland Valley game we know this is a really competitive league. That's what we want. You can't just schedule games to pad your record here."

Unionville graduated almost their entire starting squad from 2013, and went through a rebuilding year in 2014. But they are older and wiser now, and playing good rugby.

"We tell them, Learn Rugby, Play Rugby, Love Rugby," said Baker. "We work on skills and understanding the game. We want to give the kids a platform so they can explore the game here and, if they want, in college."

Unionville was led on the Saturday by Brandon Boon, their hard-running center, and flanker Samir Streatfield, who made some key stops. Hooker Austin Todd, lock Mike Weber, fullback Chris Helle, and No. 8 Paul Steffy all played well, while captain Tim Zeidman scored two key tries.

"We're just grateful we get to play these games," said Baker.

And it doesn't look like it's going to get any easier. Also Saturday in the Rugby Pa SS White, Exeter edged State College 19-14 - that was the biggest margin of victory on the weekend. Unionville faces Conestoga Saturday, while CV hosts State College, and Exeter visits Bishop Shanahan. While Unionville sits 2-0 right now, they know it's not settled.

"We have a big couple of games coming up, and after that we'll know where we stand," said Baker.

Unionville led early with a try from Ryan Margolin, but after that Bishop Shanahan scored twice to lead 14-5. Captain and center Tim Zeidman went over to make it 14-10, but Shanahan scored once more to make it 21-10 midway through the game. The final 30 minutes were tense as Unionville scored two more unconverted tries, from Dylan Rapucci and Zeidman again. Shanahan added a penalty to lead 24-20. With two minutes left Boon, who started at center and ended the game at flyhalf, went over for the winner. But the lack of conversions for Unionville might be worrying.

Also this weekend in Rugby Pa.'s single-school leagues:

Monsignor Bonner held off Gregory the Great 10-7 in a matchup that sounds more like a 13th-century battle. Cardinal O'Hara beat Malvern Prep 27-10, and St. Joe's beat Roman 50-15. Bonner and St. Joe's are both 3-0 in the SS Red, but those two teams will have to wait until May 3 to see who rules the roost there.

In the SS Blue, West Allegheny moved to 3-0 with a 45-22 defeat of South Hills on Sunday. Woodland Hills beat Penn Trafford, and Moon Area beat Fox Chapel 45-22.
