Tie Sets Up Wild Big 10 Finish

Ohio State v Wisconsin from Saturday. Matt Debarr photo.

Indiana remains on top of the Big Ten after hammering Michigan State 64-3, and got some good news (for IU) when the two teams trying to catch them, Wisconsin and Ohio State, tied 18-18.

In a thriller, Ohio State coaches felt they had the run of play over Wisconsin. And yet they could seem to punch it in, and were hurt by mistakes. Ohio State led 15-0 early but Wisconsin slowed down the game and clawed back into it. OSU hit a penalty kick with six minutes left to tie it at 18-18, and had a couple of chances to win it late, and couldn't punch it in. (We had the sequence of the end of this game wrong earlier - and have corrected it - AG.)

But that result meant no team in the Big Ten has a perfect record except for Indiana. IU has not clinched; Wisconsin plays Michigan State and Indiana, and two wins there could be enough for the Badgers, or Ohio State, who play Michigan in two weeks.

Michigan beat Iowa 78-14 and with Illinois and Ohio State left, could actually move up to 2nd. Illinois can catch Michigan for the top four, but it's likely the top four will be Indiana, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
