Teams, Schedule Set For Freetail 7s

Atlantis men in action. Colleen McCloskey photo.

The Freetail 7s is set for December 30 and 31 at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex just north of Austin, Texas.

Eight men's teams and four women's teams are playing for a purse and will also be live on Next Level Rugby. The teams are all high-level.

Pool A Men
Lomaiviti, a Fijian-American team. Lomaiviti teams play out of Fiji and the UK as well. They are talented and very athletic.

Raggamuffin 7s. Based in the Austin area, Raggamuffin is a men's select-side team that has logged some solid results. They were Men's Open finalists in the Las Vegas Invitational in the spring, and won the Plate in the 2018 LVI.

Celtic Barbarians. The Barbarians program brings together some top players from the USA and Canada. Usually the Barbarians have a strong Canadian influence but always puts it together.

North Texas. More local talent.

Pool B Men

Atlantis. The Atlantis men won the Barbados 7s last weekend, and looked good in doing it. But it's likely that the Atlantis lineup for this week will be a little different. Regardless. they are a favorite.

Jesters ORSU. Coming out of Oregon, the Oregon Sports Union Jesters are a well-regarded club which is different from several of the teams involved in that it's a club that plays together all the time. They've been among the top teams in several club 7s tournaments, including 2nd in the ORCA Cup and Roy Lucas 7s.

Gorilla Rugby. Made up mostly of young players who are still in college and played high school rugby in Texas, this is a group that was successful in men's rugby over the summer, and front up well against adult teams. These players are playing at Texas A&M, North Texas, Arkansas, AIC, Kutztown, and Lindenwood, and know what they're doing.

Rock Rugby. Another select-side program from the Austin area, Rock Rugby is also young and working on developing young players.

Women Pool

CQ Dingoes. The Central Queensland Dingoes decided it's too warm in Australia around the New Year and come to America instead. They will have been in the USA for three days to acclimate before playing, and are a knowledgeable, athletic team you have to watch.

Scion. One of the very best women's 7s programs in the country, and always a contender at nationals and the NY 7s, Scion brings national team-level talent to this tournament.

Phoenix. One of the top teams from the South, coming out of Florida.

Valkyries. The local team, which made the national playoffs in 15s and will play physical rugby in 7s. Can they match the pace of Scion or the Dingoes?
