Statement Non-Conf Win for Winona

Winona captain Taylor Freund finds some space Saturday.

In a rare clash across conference boundaries in Men's DII College rugby, Winona State handed Northern Iowa a 64-12 defeat Saturday.

Flyhalf Ryan Vargas scored two tries - both when he chipped over the defensive line and chased. He was constantly getting through the gain line. That set up center Trevon Pettigrew, who was almost unstoppable on the day. Scrumalf Nick Zerimbiski was snappy at the base of the scrum and scored two tries, while the eight players in front of him had a good day settling the platform. No. 8 Austin Dickson had a big day in the lineout, stealing several UNI throws.

Jon Shwarte showed well for Northern Iowa, but UNI will need to shake off this result and look forward to the final weeks of the WIIL. For Winona, this was another indication that their team might be one of the very best in the country.
