St. Joe's Wins Keystone

Jimmy Wolfer scored three tries and 23 total points while Chris Curcio scored twice as Saint Joseph's defeated Rutgers to win the Keystone Conference championship Sunday.

The Hawks broke free in rhe second half to turn a 14-12 game into a 43-19 final score. Wolfer sidetsepped his way in for the opening try for St. Joe's, but Rutgers replied with a try from Chris McGinnis. Chris Sweeney then then went over to put Rutgers ahead 12-7.

Curcio scored the first of his two tries to regain the lead for St. Joe's, and then tries from Nick Ballas and Wolfer extended the lead to 26-12. Once again Rutgers clawed back, with Sweeney scoring his second. But another from Wolfer made it 31-19, and tries from Noah Niumataiwalu and Curcio once more finished it up.

To get to the final, Rutgers beat a tough Temple squad 37-33 behind a play-of-the-game effort from Ethan Mabilog. St. Joe's beat West Chester 44-22 in a game that was very similar to Sunday's final - close in the first half, and all Saint Joseph's in the second.

The Hawks go on to the national fall DIAA playoffs. Meanwhile, Rutgers is expected to accept an invitation to the Bowl Series at Iona College in three weeks.
