SoCal Varsity Red Starts Spring to League Title

It’s finally business time for all of the teams in the Southern California Varsity Red Division.

All of the teams in this fully-single-school group play in the San Diego California Interscholastic Federation region. They don’t all play each other in every sport, but every school in the league is a San Diego CIF school. League organizers hope they can start to get rugby into the CIF system by playing in this conference.

Currently Cathedral Catholic is in the strongest position, having defeated a tough Fallbrook team in December. Cathedral faces Del Norte, still a bit of an unknown quantity as they haven’t played a league game yet, But Del Norte did defeat St. Augustine in a non-league game December 5, for what that’s worth.

St. Augustine, for their part, followed up that defeat with a league loss to Torrey Pines. Pines, who sent tall, speedy wing Jeremy Fleet to the HS All American camp, also won a non-league game over Mission Vista, and faces 0-1 Poway, while St. Augustine plays La Costa Canyon. The Mavericks beat Poway in their opener December 19.

Fallbrook, led this year by HSAA players Ian Crilly at flanker and Steven Branham at hooker, has a non-league game.

So now it’s a big sprint to the finish, with teams playing five or six games between now and February 20.
