SoCal Playoffs!

It’s playoff time in most of Southern California, while the chase for a spot in the Varsity Red final continues.

Here’s a rundown of what’s been going on, and what to expect:

Varsity Blue

This is a league of developing teams, and Point Loma, which had dropped down to the Blue after being in danger of not having enough players, beat up-and-coming Valhalla last weekend to finish the season undefeated to win the conference.

Varsity Red

This is the San Diego league for 100% single-school teams, most of which are basically of varsity status. La Costa Canyon is at 4-0 after beating Cathedral and basically controls their own destiny in being one of the top two teams for the final.

Cathedral (3-1) is just ahead of Torrey Pines (3-1) thanks to bonus points. So now on to Friday night, when Torrey Pines and Cathedral will face off. Torrey Pines started the season shakily, but has emerged as a real threat, and this will be a hotly-contested game.

If Cathedral wins, they will have basically sewn up 2nd, since their remaining game is against a Fallbrook team that has had some good moments but is 1-4. Torrey Pines needs to do so much more, because of their bonus point deficit. A win against Cathedral is just part of the job, and they will have to beat 1-2-1 St. Augustine, a team that was just two scored from being 3-1 and in this conversation.

If Torrey Pines beats Cathedral but loses to St. Augustine, Cathedral could still be 2nd.

LCC, meanwhile, needs to stay focused against 2-2-1 Del Norte and winless Poway to go undefeated.

Varsity White

Most of these teams are 100% single-school, or close to it. They only have to be 70% to play in this competition, but most clear that easily.

Here is how the quarterfinals pan out:

Alta Vista at Mira Costa

The Tavai family keeps rolling out talented rugby players, and the youngest (so far), Jonah, is perhaps the best. He’s a handful for Mira Costa, and the Mustangs should roll.

Rancho Bernardo at Citrus Valley

CV showed their best effort in beating previously unbeaten Dead Rabbits at the end of the Inland season. But they will have more trouble against a very good Rancho Bernardo team.

St. John Bosco at Dead Rabbits

The Inland teams get a bit of a bad rap, but this was one of the best season for the small conference. The Dead Rabbits play at home, and while Bosco is big, strong, and aggressive, the Rabbits are perhaps the most athletic team coach Steve Lohmeyer has had. This will be a contrast of styles, and the Rabbits just might race home.

View Park Prep at University City

View Park put it all together last week to dismantle Dana Hills 44-0 to secure this playoff spot. Boy can they run, but there’s a question as to whether they can link it all together, and get enough possession. The Honey Badgers, led by the thunderous Lole Veimau and this week's Player of the Week Patrick Madden will be smart with the ball.
