Citrus Valley looking good.

It’s actually a quiet-ish weekend in Southern California Boys HS rugby, as Varsity Red leaders Cathedral Catholic and Torrey Pines are not playing league games.

So that leaves a battle for 3rd with Fallbrook (1-1) playing Del Norte (0-2) and St. Augustine (1-2) playing Poway (0-3). La Costa Canyon (1-1) is also idle this week.

In the Varsity White, there’s the Mettle Cup between HTH/Pt. Loma and UC/Clairemont. This is an annual rivalry game between two teams that will later form the San Diego Young Aztecs club squad. So there’s plenty on the line, including the San Diego Varsity White Conference, with HTH 4-0 and UC 2-0. Meanwhile 1-3 Rancho Bernardo plays 0-3 Patrick Henry.

In the Los Angeles Conference, 5-1 Dana Hills has already clinched the title even after a close loss to St. John Bosco last week. Mira Costa should have 2nd sewn up as they face Wilson, a team that has forfeited all of its games so far. View Park Prep (3-2) plays Stern MASS (2-3),

And so it’s all down to the final weekend in the Inland Conference. Citrus Valley has this sewn up but would like to end on a high note. The 3-0 Blackhawks face the 1-2 Desert Sands Harlequins.

In December, Citrus Valley beat Desert Sands soundly and the game was recorded as a forfeit so both teams could rotate in as many subs as possible. That’s likely to be the case this weekend, too.

The only blemish on the Blackhawks’ record is a 48-17 loss to View Park Prep in December, but Coach Pete Smolin (who is also the Citrus Valley football coach) said his squad was missing several starters due to the football playoffs.

Led by No. 8 Jake Harland, win Taimon Faimalo, and center Voi Fata, Citrus Valley has also enjoyed a superb season from Peter Hattar. The captain has played virtually every position o the team and leads by example.
