Shakeups in D1A After Saturday Results

Did Cal (pictured in a scrum two weeks ago against Army) just blow up the rankings? Adam Smith photo.

Almost as expected the D1A collegiate landscape has been turned on its head once more.

This week's GRR D1A College Rankings>>

This weekend:

Cal beat Navy. Running out to a 24-7 lead at halftime the Bears cruised to a 47-24 victory. Navy of course worked to come back and scored three tries in the second half, but this was a huge showing from Cal (#9 GRR #7 D1A) over the #1-ranked team in both rankings, Navy.

Another lower-ranked team winning was Davenport, which came back from a 13-0 deficit to beat Arkansas State in Jonesboro 17-16. The Panthers were ranked #11 by GRR and #10 by D1A overall, with ASU at #5/#8.

Those games have opened the door for a new #1 and that new #1 might be Saint Mary's. The Gaels traveled to Provo and hammered BYU 53-5 on the road. The Saint Mary's was ranked #3 by both rankings and BYU was #7 GRR and #6 D1A.

Saint Mary's ran out to a massive lead and while BYU stormed back in the second half they ran out of time 38-21.

Another team that could walk through that doorway is Life University. Å team that lost a close one vs Navy in the fall, the Running Eagles won comfortably over Penn State this weekend 47-15 in Marietta.

Meanwhile Army beat Mary Washington 34-17 to back up their strong showing vs Cal.

So who knows what this means overall? And we're not done. Lindenwood visits Central Washington on Monday and that would shake things up even further.
