San Clemente rebounded from last week's loss to St. Augustine with an impressive 26-15 defeat of previously-unbeaten Cathedral Catholic.

With the result, San Clemente improved to 3-1 and joins St. Augustine atop the SCIRF Varsity Platinum standings. Augustine won via forfeit over St. John Bosco. The defending league champion is suffering from player burnout to a certain extent, having had their football team go all the way to the state championship (which they won). Numbers are a problem and they may well forfeit the rest of the season.

So St. Augustine moves to 3-0 with a forfeit win, and Torrey Pines wins via forfeit on Wednesday. They join San Clemente at 14 points in the standings.

For San Clemente, this was an improved performance after last week against Augustine, where they had 70% of the ball and couldn't score. This time, San Clemente made some adjustments in their attack, and did well to score four tries against a very tough Cathedral Catholic side.

"For the second week in a row we dominated ball possession," said Head Coach Stuart Proctor. "However, our attack linkage, running lines, and decision-making were far better this week."

Cathedral Catholic's scrum was strong and they opted to scrum down at every opportunity. But San Clemente defended Cathedral's attack off the scrum very well and Cathedral struggled to make that tactic pay off.

San Clemente scored four tries in four different ways and were led by loose forward Kyle Kerr, lock Wade Wilson, flyhalf Trey Torticill at ten, and center Alex Anawalt.

Mira Costa logged its second win of the season with a 52-26 defeat of Fallbrook.

Next up for San Clemente is a tour to Arizona. Meanwhile easily-forgotten (but shouldn't be) La Costa Canyon takes on Cathedral on Wednesday, and Torrey Pines plays St. Augustine in a big on on Saturday.
