Salisbury Impresses as Top Teams in MARC Raise Hands

Salisbury Impresses as Top Teams in MARC Raise Hands

Salisbury defeated Georgetown Saturday to set up a battle for the MARC D2 South with rivals Towson.

The Sharks started off strong against an always-tough Hoyas side and led 21-0 at halftime.

Right before that break, however, Salisbury were shown a yellow card. That wasn't their last, as a series of yellow cards hampered them for the remainder of the same. At times the Sharks were down to 13 players.

Despite the rather egregious lapses in discipline, Salisbury hung on, matching Georgetown try-for-try in the second half (both sides scored three tries and converted one) to win 38-17.

Lock Jaden Woolary was a force in the rucks and at the gainline both as a carrier and making tackles. The halfback combination of Maz Gruebl and Robby Kesselrign controlled the pace of the game and worked well with center Ika Kvaliashvili, who also nailed some difficult conversions on the day.

With those three backs plus No. 8 Jack Warnick keeping Salisbury in scoring position most of the day, Georgetown was not able to close the gap.

On defense Salisbury is dynamic, but will have to clean up the penalties.

With that Salisbury is now 2-0 in the MARC D2, right behind 3-0 Towson. For their part, Towson beat UMBC 48-20. Scranton leads the D2 North division after winning 73-3 over East Stroudsburg, while Villanova won big over Widener 53-17. Penn was hoping to keep close to the Wildcats in the D2 East, but were upended by Lehigh.

So in a conference that usually produces some surprises in the their playoffs, three are currently unbeaten in Villanova, Towson, and Salisbury. Scranton leads their division with a 3-1 record, having lost a bit of a barnburner last month 46-31.

Those are your top sides in the conference, but as Towson showed last year as the #8 seed, that might not be enough.
