Rutgers Edges Delaware

Rutgers upended Delaware Friday night in a non-conference clash for both teams.

The result, a 15-12 victory for Rutgers, was perhaps a little bit of a surprise, and either a wakeup call for the Blue Hens, a signal that Rutgers is one the rise, or perhaps both.

Delaware took an early lead, punishing Rutgers penalties, but the Scarlet Knights held the run of play for much of the rest of the first half and scored a try when they spun it to center Chris Sweeney, who went in to score. So that tied it at 5-5, and then Nolan Soto scooped up a loose ball - Delaware had trouble controlling their passes - and raced in to give Rutgers a 10-5 lead.

Just before the break some slick passing put Soto away for a 65-meter run and a 15-5 lead.

In the second half, Rutgers couldn’t quite match their offensive output, and the heat and humidity began to take its toll. Delaware scored off a quick tap, and worked hard to get into scoring position to win the game, but Rutgers held them off.
