A Royal Navy Welcome

PORTSMOUTH, England - The USA Men’s National Team got their official welcome to the Rugby World Cup at the HMS Nelson Wardroom and on board HMS Victory at the traditional home of the British navy.

The players all wore their suits and official Rugby World Cup caps as welcomed the team to the United Kingdom.

"Everyone who has welcomed us (in Portsmouth) and supported us here has brought this World Cup experience to another level,” said USA captain Chris Wyles. "The local community and the Royal Navy have been so kind to us since we arrived. I cannot thank them enough for letting us train and prepare at their base. I speak for myself and the rest of the guys when I say we cannot wait to get started."

USA Manager Tristan Lewis is an Englishman from Chicago, and he was thrilled to be in Portsmouth.

“We have had an amazing 24 hours,” said Lewis. “Since we have arrived everyone has been so friendly and welcoming. It's been mind-boggling already and the tournament hasn't even started yet. To have our welcome ceremony in such a prestigious and historic venue is a true privilege and an honor that myself and the rest of the USA team are truly blessed to have."

So now it truly begins. The Eagles have a week to get ready to face Samoa in a crucial  game. If they want to get the automatic berth in 2019, or greater goals than that, it all starts with Samoa.

“We have to be ready for whatever comes our way and to compete at our best every time,” said Wyles. "We must wear the USA jersey with pride and honor and do our home fans proud. We have a responsibility to them and to the thousands of children who watch us across the world."
