Plenty to Play For in Midwest Championship

The Midwest Boys Championship is set for this weekend at its ancestral home of the Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, Ind., and it promises to be a stern test for the teams involved.

While some higher-profile teams are not present in the Championship bracket, some having school commitments that conflict and others preferring to rest up for HS Nationals (also at Elkhart), that just afford other teams to find competition they don’t normally see.

St. Edward, ranked #21 among school teams, will take on Mudsock (AKA HSE-Fishers), ranked #38 among HS clubs. That game is paired with #16 school team Bishop Dwenger facing #40 club Glen Ellyn. The winning and losing teams in those games will play each other in the Cup or Consolation semis.

In the other half of the bracket, Indiana’s Avon (#42 among clubs) played St. Xavier, while Chargers faces #19 school team Penn.

That last game is the only intra-state matchup, with the others being Ohio vs Indiana, Indiana vs Illinois, and Indiana vs Ohio.

Interestingly, some of the teams not sending varsity lineups are sending younger groups. So Pendleton has their 2nds and 3rds in the Open Division and JV Division, respectively. St. Ignatius runs out their JVs, their 3rds, and their Freshmen in the JV and Developmental brackets.

The Open Division includes Perrysburg out of Ohio, Warsaw out of Indiana, as well as Catholic Central, West Ottawa, and Birmingham out of Michigan.

St. Edward, Moeller, St. Xavier, Neuqua, and Notre Dame de la Salette also send developmental teams for a bracket that is becoming more robust as time goes on.
