Pen Green v SFGG Marquee NorCal Clash

There's plenty at stake this weekend in Northern California's Boys DI HS league as a well-regarded SFGG team takes on always-dangerous Peninsula Green.

Peninsula Green comes into the game after beating Pleasanton - a very solid Pleasanton - 45-12.

Pen Green controlled the game from the start and were just too powerful with the bvall in hand. The Pen Green backs consistently tackled the Pleasanton backs behind the gain line and executed their portfolio of plays fluidly, even in the latter phases of play.

The first try for PG came when outside center Tavite Lopeti ran onto a long pass and raced in Inside center Tevita Mailau added two more before Pleasanton got a try from Malik Hess. In the second half, it was again the backs torching the defense. Fullback Ty Wilcox capped off a movement that saw most of the backs touch the ball. Mailau added his third, and then Naima Fualaau also scored. Hess got a second try for Pleasanton at the end.

Peninsula Green beat Solo Falcons in the Kickoff Tournament, and have since built on that. It wasn't a fluke. The PG squad plays a very exciting and fluid team game.

SFGG poses a new test. They also played the Falcons (and lost) but were missing a few starters in that game. Head Coach Ruairi Murphy said his team is very young, and maybe we should be more worried about them next year. Regardless, they've been playing smart rugby, with Ronan Murphy directing play nicely at flyhalf. His field vision has been impressive and fullback Jasper Green, a transplant from England, has shown a snappy ability to pick the right times to slot into the backline.

Up front, senior Julian Villavicencio has the hard-charger at the back of a very big pack. The forwards are large, but need to get their fitness up, and that could be where Peninsula Green takes SFGG down.

"A lot of these guys have played together since middle school," said Murphy. "But we also have some new players. it's a good group, but we've got a tough bunch of games ahead of us."

Both teams sit at 2-0 in league play ... for now.
