Peaks Defeat Canyons in Collegiate Shield

The Peaks defeated the Canyons 36-17 in the MLR Collegiate Shield Saturday in Herriman, Utah.

The two all-star teams of college players, many of which are applying for the 2022 Major League Rugby Draft (but not all) battled in a game at Zions Bank Stadium.

The Canyons opened up the scoring with a superb 50-22 by flyhalf Chandler Owens (Kansas) which was then capitalized on with a maul and a well-taken try. But the Peaks came right back with an excellent open-field score, followed soon thereafter by a nifty dummy and snipe from St. Bonaventure scrumhalf Sebastiano Villani. A long run, almost the length of the field, but Arizona State wing Devin Rivet tied the game up for the Canyons, but the Peaks started to pull away as the game wore on.

They took a 24-17 lead into halftime and scored two in the second half. The continuity and the players seemed to wilt a bit in the dry, windy heat of Utah as the game wore on.

Several players from a variety of divisions showed well. We will have more analysis on that later this weekend.
