Pac West: Fresno State, Sac State Both Win

Fresno State has taken control of the Pacific Western Conference, even though it's still early in the season.

The Bulldogs went into Week 3 2-0 as were their opponents, Chico State. It would have been reasonable to expect this game to be close, but it wasn't.

Prop Diego Hultron crashed over in the first five minutes for Fresno State and while things were tight for several minutes after that, a surge late in the first half put the momentum firmly with Fresno State. Prop Carlos Banuelos scored after the midway mark of the first period, and then tries from fullback Isaiah Hunter and wing Nathan Eldridge came just before the break.

Scrumhalf Isaiah Kruse has been instrumental in directing the Fresno State attack and he also added two conversions for a 24-0 halftime lead for the Bulldogs.

In the second half it again took Fresno State time to really get going but after the midway point of the half Kruse scampered over, and moments later he scored his second. The game opened up after that and wing Joshua Jacobson ran in three tries in the space of six minutes. Chico State scored at the end to prevent the shutout.

Kruse scored 16 points.

Sacramento State rebounded from a loss to to Fresno State last week with a 34-17 defeat of Nevada.

"We learned a lot last week against Fresno and fixed a few, but not all, of our deficiencies," said Sac State Head Coach Steve Seifert, who still lamented some missed scoring opportunities and 50-50 passes.

"We're still a work in progress," added Seifert.
