Okapi Remains Atop Florida League

three teams remain unbeaten in the Florida Boys HS league after Boca Raton, Okapi, and Cardinal Gibbons all won.

Gibbons is the only team with a perfect record, improving to 3-0 after beating the Jacksonville Wolverines 36-10. Both Boca and Okapi have one tie on their record (with each other, naturally).

Boca defeated 3-1 Wellington in emphatic style 40-7 to move to 3-0-1. The Okapi Wanderers continue to log solid results and remain atop the league with a 4-0-1 record with a 27-10 win over the Tampa Krewe.

Gibbons Head Coach Eric Aumann said that the game was much closer than the score indicates and he had high praise for the Jacksonville squad.

"We had way too many penalties—15 or more—but the kids kept working hard because that Jacksonville team was extremely tough and never let up," said Aumann. "We looked at their schedule and saw they had lost some games so we were not expecting a team that was fitter than us and had skills that advanced. This is a team that has a scary backline and they matched us physically."

The big difference, perhaps, was that Gibbons had a strong bench and Jacksonville had players out due to COVID. But Aumann felt he'd dodged a bullet.

"This is a team we don’t want to play in the playoffs," he said.
