North Carolina HS Season Kicks Off

The North Carolina High School season kicked off on Friday with over a dozen teams on the slate.

North Carolina splits its HS rugby season. From December through to the middle of February, school teams compete for the school championship (won last year by Marvin Ridge). The players then take a two-week turnaround before entering the club season. Not every player goes into club rugby, but many do. This format is reflected in Southern California.

This year's NC league has a Tier 1 and a Tier 2, with newer teams such as Ascend Academy and Capitals in Tier 2 along with B sides from other school teams. In Tier 1, recognizable teams like Myers Park, Hough, Ardrey Kell, South Meck, Clayton/Corinth, Providence, and Charlotte Catholic (as well as Marvin Ridge) playing. Joining the league this year is Sun Valley HS, which has recruited quite well.

Marvin Ridge opened up its season with wins in Tier 1 and Tier 2, beating Providence in convincing fashion in ther opening Tier 1 game.

Also logging a victory was South Meck over Clayton/Corinth.

"We're lucky to have a lot of good teams in our area," said Marvin Ridge center Finlay Mitchell. "It's good to see the game grow. The more players ... the better for the future."

Marvin Ridge is most certainly looking to repeat, said Mitchell.
