New Orleans 7s Saturday

Watch out for Spring Hill.

Men's college 7s teams from in and around Louisiana will converge on New Orleans this weekend for the New Orleans 7s.

Loyola, Troy, Tulane, Southern Mississippi, Spring Hill, South Alabama, Mississippi State, Louisiana Tech, and Alabama-Birmingham are all involved. MSU was a bit of a surprise team last season, showcasing some pace and athleticism. Spring Hill, which has strong administrative support, could well come away with some wins here.

Home team Tulane has shown themselves to be tough in tournament play.

The tournament has grown so much that it has been moved to the Gretna Rugby Park in Gretna, La., where Tulane and Alabama women, and HS teams the Barbarians and Shaw will also play.

Tournament director Matt Austin said this tournament could be a DII qualifier next year.

"Right now we just want to show that we've got some good rugby down here in the South, and some good 7s," Austin said.

Here's the lineup of the first round of games:

9am Loyola v Troy

9:25am Tulane v South Alabama

9:45am Southern Mississippi v Spring Hill

10:10am Mississippi State B v Alabama-Birmingham

10:25am Mississippi State A v Louisiana Tech

After the first round, the teams will be re-bracketed based on results - the winners ranked 1 through 5 by margin of victory, and the losers by margin of victory.

The top four will play in the semis, while the 5th-best winning team still has a shot to get to the 3rd-place game.
