New International Stadium in North Carolina?

New International Stadium in North Carolina?

UNC Chapel Hill is looking at a new stadium for international sports, including rugby.

The University of North Carolina is reportedly exploring the building of a new international sports stadium in Chapel Hill.

Prompted by a vocal and well-heeled cricket fan base in the region, the new stadium would be created for cricket, rugby, and soccer, with an eye toward hosting major events. Events re expected to be held throughout the USA leading into the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, and the University if looking to take advantage of that.

Reports don't specific mention the 2031 Men's Rugby World Cup or the 2033 Women's Rugby World Cup, but there are potentially opportunities there, also.

The plan is for a 25,000-seat stadium that could even host UNC Chapel Hill collegiate rugby games. According to the area's local CBS affiliate, the proposal for the stadium predicts local economic impact of around $5 billion.
