CHULA VISTA, Calif.—The USA Men’s Sevens today confirmed that Nate Ebner has had to make the difficult decision to withdraw from contention for Quest for Gold Sevens and the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Ebner re-joined the team in March following the end of the 2020 NFL Season. Since his return, the 2016 Olympian has been unable to take the field with the squad, giving him no clear opportunities to vie for selection.

“It pains me to announce my withdrawal from competing for a spot at the Tokyo Olympics with the USA Men’s Sevens," said Ebner. "After the 2020 NFL season, I had an injury that required off-season surgery. While my recovery is on track for the next football season, unfortunately, the timetables did not align with trials for the Games.

“Thank you to USA Rugby for welcoming me back into the squad like family. And thank you to the players working so hard to make the Olympic team and help the United States bring home a medal. I’d also like to thank the New York Giants for their support as I chase another dream. I look forward to the 2021 NFL season and will continue to work hard every day to be ready.

“Finally, thank you to all those who supported my journey thus far. Your encouragement has been amazing and motivates me to keep pushing forward.”

Ebner had been very welcome in the USA setupnot only because he could have been an asset for the Olympic team on the field, but because of his leadership and approach off the field as well.

“We are all disappointed for Nate and appreciative of his efforts to rejoin the squad and make a run for Tokyo," said USA Head Coach Mike Friday. “Physically, Nate has not had the opportunity to compete, therefore he cannot be considered for selection to either the Olympics or Quest for Gold in LA. Ultimately it is our responsibility to take a long-term physical view and ensure we are protecting Nate’s best interest considering what’s ahead for him this forthcoming football season.”

The USA Men’s Sevens will compete in Quest for Gold in Los Angeles from June 25-26 as the final preparation event before Tokyo. Following LA, Coach Friday and staff will make selections for the Olympic Games with a team to be announced publicly on July 2.
