Mountain View Wins Idaho

Mountain View defeated Rocky Mountain 20-14 Saturday to win the Boys DI HS state title in Idaho.

Mountain View's teamwork proved to be too much for Rocky Mountain. All three tries were accomplished in the same fashion - using the backs to get into the Rocky Mountain 22, and then punching the ball ahead with the forwards in clinical fashion until they made the tryline.

"It was something we worked on," said Mountain View Coach Hamish Bell. "We wanted to make sure when we got into the 22 we were able to score. Our best drives combined our forwards and our backs supporting each other. We looked really good, and I put that down to a team effort."

Rocky Mountain kept within shouting distance with a penalty try after an offside in-goal, and then it was a case of Mountain View holding on.

The Mavericks first scoring drive developed from a lineout on Rocky Mountain's half of the pitch. By the time the Mavericks found the goal, five backs and seven forwards had carried the ball, moving it from one sideline to the other. Mountain View's other points were from similar team efforts.

"We talked a lot about family and supporting the guy next to you," said Bell. "That's exactly what they did. I couldn't be more proud."

Team Captain Kody Walker had his usual big runs, but it was other forwards who scored all of Mountain View's three tries. Flyhalf Cody Hersey also contributed with a penalty kick and conversion.

"We could not have played a stronger, more confident, and good spirited team," said Rocky Mountain Head Coach Kirk Pulver. "Honestly. I tip my hat to you guys."

This is the 3rd year in a row that Mountain View has made the state final, winning their first in 2014 and losing in overtime in 2013.

Walker was immense at No. 8 for Mountain View, but there was also big contributions from hooker Damien Peterson, prop Brian Wiggins, and flanker West Fletcher. It was a nice performance by Mountain View, and Bell said he's like to play another game. He is looking for a top team from outside Idaho for one more challenge match. Bell also praised Rugby Idaho Executive Director Mandy Genetti for putting together a full slate of championship games at Boise State University's rec fields.

"She's done a great job," said Bell.
