Two top Idaho single schools played Saturday in a rematch of last year's State Championship, with the Mountain View Mavericks and the ranked Capital Eagles taking each other one.

When the dust had settled, Mountain View were winners 32-25.

The Eagles were undefeated leading up to this match, dominating their previous opponents by a combined score of 185 to 15. The defending State Champs started the match quickly, scoring on a penalty kick to give Capital a 3-0 lead.

“We know Capital has an explosive offense and respected how quickly they can score,” said Mountain View’s Head Coach Hamish Bell.

The Maverick’s soon responded with a penalty kick of their own, then trading try for try. The lead changed 4 times through the game, as both teams showed their ability to offload, support in space, and ruck quickly.

In the end, Mountain View proved to be too much for Capital, with the Maverick’s senior captain and No. 8, Kody Walker, scoring back-to-back tries, and junior flyhalf Cody Hersey kicking for 17 points. Sophomore winger Abdi Osman also added a try.

One of the game’s highlights was when Hersey punched a penalty kick from 40 meters out, near the 15 meter mark.

“Cody’s kicking has been a tremendous game changer for us this year,” said Bell.

Capital Head Coach Matt Jacobson said "It’s always great to come out and play this game against guys who play it the right way; that play hard, play fast, play fair. You guys did a great job. You deserved it."
