Mira Costa, Bosco to SoCal Varsity White Final

Mira Costa will play St. John Bosco in the final of Southern California's Varsity White Conference after both won semifinals this weekend.

Mira Costa defeated a tough Rancho Bernardo team 47-7 to continue the Mustangs' dominant play this winter. Rancho is experienced and athletic, but the Mira Costa squad has been playing some inspired rugby of late. Costa exerted pressure early and got over the tryline four times, only to be held up by the tenacious RB defenders.

The Mustangs finally broke through in the 23rd minute when scrumhalf Harrison Dulgarian took a quick tap, dummied to No. 8 Jonah Tavai, and then passed off to captain Justin Johnson for the try. Johnson, normally a forward, was playing inside center for the first time in his rugby career. Next up, lock Alec Oshita won a lineout, found Dulgarian, who then found prop Jordan Fischer for a 28-meter run. Costa recycled and flyhalf Brandon Espeso slide through a gap and was gone. 12-0 Mira Costa at halftime after wing Kaden Loversky hit the tough-angle conversion.

In the second half, another new forward-turned-back, David Arredondo, was set up by Espeso for a try. Loversky converted this one, and then Arredondo scored again thanks to Dulgarian being aggressive in getting the quick tap going. Another excellent Loversky conversion made it 26-0.

The Broncos finally broke though with a try, but Mira Costa replied almost immediately, with Dulgarian sending a long pass to Johnson, who popped back to Espeso for the try.

Jonah Tavai grubbered through for Espeso, who popped to fullback Sean Walker. On the final play of the game, loose forward Justin Goring picked up fromt he base of the scrum and exploded through the Bronco defense for 68 meters. Loversky ended the day 6-7 on conversions, many out near the touchline, for the 47-7 win.

The 10-0 Mustangs face a big, physical St. John Bosco that has had to scrape and battle for victories. On Saturday, they took on University City in a wild game, 47-31.

St. John Bosco and Mira Costa met on January 22, with Mira Costa winning 45-26. That was the most points Mira Costa allowed in any game this season.

The championship game will be Feb 20 at 11am at the UCLA campus as a curtain-raiser for the UCLA v Arizona college game.
