Men's College 7s Tournaments This Weekend

We just love this shot of Citadel scoring in Las Vegas. Citadel is in the SoCon 7s finals. David Barpal photo.

Several conferences take one more step to a college 7s national title, or decide who will qualify for the USA Rugby championship tournament in Cary, NC.

The Southeastern Rugby Conference will finish up their three-tournament run with an eight-team event in Columbia, SC. Hosts USC are one of the favorites, but there are plenty of contenders. See more here.

The Big Ten decides its champion after two seeding tournaments. Purdue, which won the last one, is a team to watch out for and is in Pool B with Illinois, Iowa, and Michigan. Wisconsin, which won the other warmup, is grouped with Michigan State, Ohio State, and Northwestern. Where's Indiana? IU is in the DIA playoffs, and so won't be in this event, but we're pretty sure they'll have some 7s tournament to play in later. (Here's a graphic of the schedule.)

Bowling Green hosts the MAC Conference 7s, and this will be stacked with good 7s teams. Bowling Green, Miami, Western Michigan, Ohio, Louisville, Cincinnati, Kent State, CMU, and Dayton are all in it, and all can do some damage. Bowling Green is probably the favorite, but it's not a sure thing. (Here's a graphic of the schedule.

The Keystone Conference holds its third tournament at West Chester. For the Keystone Conference, there is no championship tournament - it's accumulated points from the three events. Temple and JMU are currently tied in series points, with St. Joseph's and West Virginia close behind. JMU is also playing a DIA playoff game, so you wonder what team they can field for this. Madison is on Pool B with WVU, West Chester, and Millersville. In Pool A it's Temple, St. Joe's, Pitt, and Villanova.

The this in the series of Empire 7s tournaments stops at SUNY Binghamton. Like the Keystone, the Empire does a points accumulation system to decide its conference winner. Colgate, which has won both tournaments so far*, leads with 14 points, three more than Fordham, and should finish top.

*Empire allowed non-conference teams to play, but put them all in one bracket, so the final was always an Empire team and a non-Empire team, with the Empire finalist getting the winner's points for the Empire standings. Colgate made two finals, and played well, but did not beat the non-Empire participants, AIC and Kutztown.

The ACRL is also hosting a tournament, with the winner getting qualification to the CRC (same as the Big 10 and SCRC), as well as USA Rugby nationals.

The SIRC championship also produces a nationals qualifier. Held at Kennnesaw State, the tournament will run two days. Middle Tennessee State and Florida International decided to play their DIAA 15s playoff game two weeks early in order to be ready for this. FIU, MTSU, and hosts Kennesaw State are among the contenders.

Meanwhile, we've got two DII tournaments we're tracking. One is Fool's Fest in Rochester, Minn., where Minnesota-Duluth has an excellent shot at winning. See here for more. The other is the SoCon 7s finals. Eight teams from the South are involved in a two-day tournament at East Carolina University.

UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Wilmington, Furman, The Citadel, Elon, East Carolina University, Wake Forest, and Coastal Carolina are all involved. Citadel has been working hard on thier 7s, UNW and Furman are tough, and this is a really difficult tournament o handicap.
