Men DI College Rankings Week 23
Men DI College Rankings Week 23
The Men's DI College rankings continue to be complicated by the fact that there are three separate DI competitions, and a chunk of the teams aren't even playing 15s at all. And of course there's the split season - some play in the fall, some in the winter/spring, some both. We really have not had a time when all teams that could be ranked are playing 15s at the same time.
So we muddle along, here what we came up with. The top 10-15 are fairly set. Arkansas State drops down after their loss to Clemson and Clemson's solid but not perfect record keeps the Tigers where we've had them for a while - in the mid-teens. Central Florida, we've decided, is pretty good and if they had a travel budget we'd love to see them in the DIA Mid-South. They play DIAA because they have to, geographically. This ranking of all DI teams is designed, in part, to tell you who is good no matter what division they play in.
Texas A&M drops down because we've gone back over all of their results and concluded that other teams are stronger. Cal Poly moves up, way up, because, with their convincing defeat of San Diego State, they proved where they are, and the rest of their results back that up.
Two teams drop out of the Top 50. Notre Dame because they lost to Texas, who aren't ranked and we don't think should be even after that victory, and Oklahoma, because of their issues which vacated some results. We'll respect that ruling. Arizona, which beat Notre Dame by a slim margin, has too few big wins on their resume to stay, and while they held on thanks to a close loss to UCLA, they also drop out and Chico State comes in. We were trying to find a spot for Iona or Santa Barbara City College, but couldn't.
Coming in to the Top 50 are Western Washington - who could have been ranked alongside Washington and Oregon earlier but we didn't, and they beat both of those teams, so they move in - and Arkansas, which won the Heart of America. Missouri and Kansas State could well be in the Top 50 also based on how close they were to Arkansas. This, in fact, is where it has gotten tricky - all of those conference winners and runners up from the fall that are playing 7s now (or not reporting their results - ahem, Dayton) could all be shunted down, but it doesn't seem fair. What they did in the fall should be forgotten, should it? It is very difficult for a dominant fall team to hold onto a high ranking while playing only 7s in the spring (Kutztown has succeeded), they should hold onto something.
We don't normally care about 7s in the 15s ranking, but we have to acknowledge that the strong performances of Kutztown and especially South Carolina, have given them buoyancy.
But a warning - the fall hierarchy doesn't live forever. Penn State may have lost to Kutztown in the fall, but they can still show improvement, can they not? If they win again in DIAA, that could be enough for us to put aside that KU loss as old news.
