MAC Opens Weekend

Pitt started with a win.

The Mid Americans Conference opened up with two lopsided results and two closer games that

First the lopsided games. Louisville defeated Dayton 67-0, while Bowling Green won comfortably over Ohio 69-3.

Meanwhile, Western Michigan showed well in a 35-19 defeat of IUPUI.

IUPUI's No. 8, Taylor Green, led his team well but Western Michigan got solid work from veterans Nick Pastore at center and Gabe Spees on the wing—both scored tries.

Two freshmen put in a good defensive effort for the Broncos in Aiden Wardell at flanker and Luke Wishmeyer at lock.

And the closest game was Pitt against Cincinnati. For Pitt this was a huge opening win, taking the result 16-12. Pitt was led by 2021-22 team MVP and outside center Khalil Abdullah. He scored the lone Pitt try and was a physical force throughout.

Flanker Matt Stefurak took on the kicking duties and was 4-for-4 with a conversion and three penalty goals.

Pitt did a good job of pinning UC in their end with their kick-and-chase. And with the Panthers able to steal lineout ball they were able to relieve pressure on their end.
