Louisiana Latest - Hurricanes Win, League Down to the Wire

Hurricanes hooker Reese Guidry takes off against Brother Martin.

We're coming down to the crucial final games in the Louisiana HS rugby league.

The Bayou Hurricanes is in the middle of a late-season charge, and is now 3-0, the same record as Jesuit of New Orleans.

Bayou defeated Brother Martin 62-15 over the weekend behind yet another player-of-the-game award for Zavier Triplett. Playing in front of their first home crowd of the season, the Hurricanes came out firing with wing Gabriel Cardenas, prop Kieran Webb, outside center James Williams, Triplett at inside center, wing Shane Wright, and lock Amauchechukwo Collins all scoring tries. Cardenas converted three of those tries and hooker Reece Guidry converted one as the Hurricanes ran out to a 38-5 lead.

The second half started a bit slow with the visitors striking first. But the Hurricanes would answer with a try from Williams and a conversion by Cardenas. Brother Martin would score one more time before replacement prop Trey Gaudet, Wright, and then Williams all touch down again for Bayou.

It was a tough game regardless for Bayou as four started left the game injured in the first half.

The Hurricanes will host the 2-2 NOLA Barbarians next week in a crucial game for the Barbarians if they want to think about the playoffs. Jesuit of New Orleans won 31-10 in a non-league game. The SHARC club out of Shreveport has regathered its forces and is on the field, albeit not in league play, and Jesuit held on there.

There's still plenty to play for in the next two weekends. The Hurricanes play the Barbarians and then Jesuit. Meanwhile, Jesuit takes on Brother Martin this coming week. And Brother Martin also faces St. Paul's April 1. Everyone except Captain Shreve (their season is complete and they went 0-5) is still in with a shot at a top four spot, although St. Paul's needs some help. Brother Martin is currently 4th, but could shoot up to 2nd or even 1st (with help) if they win their final two games.
