Long Beach State 6-0 in Gold Coast

Cal State Long Beach defeated Southern California 50-5 Saturday to finish their Gold Coast Conference season 6-0 and move to 17-0 overall.

The 49ers take the #1 seed into the Gold Coast playoffs, with University of San Diego #2, Santa Barbara City College #3, and Cal State Fullerton #4.

"Over this spring we've really gelled as a team," said Long Beach State Coach Jason Reynolds. "We've got a lot of senior players who are used to playing with each other, and they bring an energy to training and the games. It's really exciting for a coach."

Young players have folded in well into the CSULB team as the experienced players have helped them get up to speed. As a result, Long Beach has a varied game.

"A lot of teams have one or two go-to players who you focus on shutting down," said Reynolds. "I don't think you can do that with us. We have go-to guys everywhere. If we've got the opposing pack on roller skates and we're driving them back, we keep it tight in the forwards. If the holes are out wide, we can run it wide."

The 49er defense is excellent, with the team allowing only 17 points in conference play all season. But their offense isn't bad, either. Relative newcomer Anthony Simeone, who was a running back in high school football, and just started playing rugby in January, scored three tries on Saturday. He scored those tries in part because the more experienced CSULB players helped set him up.

"We've been playing well but now we're looking at the playoffs and this is a situation where now we can have a bad day and we're done," said Reynolds. "We need to continue to be focussed."

Here are the standings of the Gold Coast conference with one game left, between winless UC Irvine and winless UC San Diego.
