Life, ASU Win in Mid-South

Life University is now 5-0 in the Mid-South with Saturday night's 32-10 defeat of Lindenwood.

The two teams traded early penalty goals and then Lindenwood took a lineout close to the Life line. Lindenwood won the lineout, and after a couple of pushes, hooker Jeremy Leber went over. Lungi Tshuma was good on the conversion and Lindenwood led 10-3 in the 28th minute.

Life replied with a long series of phases and a break down the sideline that almost ended in a try. Lindenwood got a 22 dropout, and Life kept up the pressure, but couldn't break through.

Lindenwood then came close to scoring, with Tshuma and Christian Rodriguez working a move that was just stopped by the Life cover defense. Somehow Life rescued themselves, and cleared away. The Running Eagles then stole the ensuing lineout. Sam Cowley burst through and then popped a kick ahead for Harley Davidson to score. Cowley converted to tie the game 10-10 at 36 minutes.

That's how the first half ended, and it wasn't until well into the second half that the deadlock was broken. From a scrum at midfield Life again attacked Lindenwood on the left side. They were stopped, but Lindenwood killed the ball, and while Life had the advantage, they ran a reverse pass off the halfback to Duncan Van Schalkwyk for the try. Cowley converted for the 17-10 lead.

Six minutes later, Life was pounding on the line. Lindenwood appeared to steal the ball and clear their lines, but as everyone was running around the field, the referee called the play back, consulted with his assistant, and called the try - Justin Johnson had made it over.

Cowley added a try and a penalty goal to finish it all off. (Video of the game here.)

Meanwhile, Arkansas State moved to 2-1 with a 76-24 win over Clemson. Sione Fangaiuiha scored three tries. Pedro Alvarez added two, and Calvin Gentry, Zach Young, Brandon van Niekerk, Preston Weigel, Tabo Maree, Neil Maestri, and Val Balandre also scored. Brock Roper kicked six of the eight team conversions.
