La Costa Canyon Impresses in Preseason Win

La Costa Canyon High School Mavericks defeated Dana Hills in a non-league Southern California HS game this past weekend.

The Tritons were still without their football athletes as the school was still in the playoffs, so this was always going to be a tough one for , and LCC was without a couple of other starters. The Dana Hills Triton won the JV game 10-7, and in the Varsity game, LCC ran out convincing winners 45-5.

The Mavericks showed why they went undefeated last season by taking an early lead - running in a nicely-orchestrated try from within the LCC half. A good skip pass from Justin Petersen put Sean Lumkong in a hole. Lumkong took it to within five yards before making a wonderful pass to Brendan Wilson who shook off a defender and finished in the corner.  Lumkong scored next, followed by a run from Petersen who stepped through the defense, then danced around the fullback to score under the poles.  Hooker Aiden Ryan showed tremendous grit, coupled with a high work rate, stripped the ball five meters out, and showcaed a snazzy dive to finish in the corner.

Mavericks scrumhalf Tucker Trickey pounced on a Triton error in their own try zone for another try, and LCC was up 33-0 at halftime.

Tritons were first to score in the 2nd half when flyhalf Zackery Rose hit back with a sniping run up the middle and scored in the corner.  Connor Bradic, the big LCC center, ran a hard unders line and Lumkong hit him perfectly and he barreled over to score under the poles. LCC loosehead prop Reese Prefontaine barged over to round off the scoring, 45-5.

Ian Tarr was the pick of the Maverick forwards, with the backline honors going to Justin Petersen, who kicked five of seven conversions to add to his try.
