Kutztown Wins Own 7s Tourney
Kutztown University hosted their second annual KU Rugby 7s Tournament Saturday, coming away with the championship over a tough AIC team.
The event consisted of 13 teams divided into a Premier Division and Open Division.
Kutztown-2 , Kutztown-3, West Chester University, East Stroudsburg-2, Drexel-2, and Lafayette College comprised the Open bracket, while Kutztown-1, American International College (AIC) , Drexel, St. Bonaventure, University at Buffalo, East Stroudsburg and Wheeling Jesuit.
The game event was televised locally and on the internet. When the dust settled, Kutztown -2, which is the same KU side that finished second in the Stony Brook Tournament a few weeks ago, defeated a strong Lafayette College side, 50-5 in the Final of the Open Division. KU-2 was undefeated on the day. West Chester took third.
In the Premier Division, AIC survived a tough Buffalo team in the semis to make the final, scoring two tries in the final two minutes to win. Kutztown, meanwhile, was pushed by a determined St. Bonavanture. KU scored at the death to seal a 17-7 victory.
In the battle for third place, Buffalo dropped a sudden death decision to St. Bonaventure.
The Premier Division Final lived up to expectations as both 7s teams have been playing well this year. Kutztown seemed more in control and scored four tries to AIC's one, until the Yellowjackets got on in late to make it a 24-12 final.
The Kutztown defense did what they have been doing for the last three tournaments, hitting hard and stopping opponents. AIC's two tries were the only points the Bears gave up all day. Robert Stortz scored five tries on the day, while the entire KU team played well despite being without captain Niku Kruger held out as he prepares for the USA developmental tour to South America.
