KU Win Sets Up Rugby East Finale

Jonathan Sage was one of the veteran players on a Kutztown squad that got some time for reserves Saturday.

Kutztown University can clinch the Rugby East Conference if the Bears score four tries against Penn State next week, or lose by seven points or less, or tie, or win.

Of course, KU wants to win, but even a competitive loss will do the job.

"We want to win the conference," said Head Coach Gregg Jones, who saw his Bears beat West Virginia 79-12 this weekend, with several starters rested. Younger players Jason Denofa and Murphy Lill (both wings) each scored three tries against the Mountaineers, while center Ian Carmichael added two tries. Robert Stortz, Andrew DeColli, Sami Devine, Joe O'Shields, and Jordan Ghyzel also touched down while Jonathan Sage kicked seven conversions.

Jones used a lot of younger forwards and said he was pleased to see them provide some continuity to the KU attack.

"The object was to play disciplined rugby and play within the system and they did that," said Jones. "We wanted to play with the same intensity that we showed against Army. The backs had no trouble getting the ball wide, so it was mostly about the forwards showing that intensity."

Meanwhile, Penn State upheld their side of the bargain by beating Iona Friday night

So it comes down to next week, with the conference on the line.

Meanwhile, at the lower end of the conference, some teams got a nice boost of confidence. Wheeling Jesuit defeated Delaware 29-20 and now cruise into the final weekend ready to take on West Virginia with an eye on a winning conference record. St. Bonaventure was a bit of a surprise in beating ranked Notre Dame College 29-24. And Buffalo beat Brockport 103-17, thanks to six tries from Ike Onwukanjo and tries from six other players. Buffalo Head Coach Mike Hodgins said this showed the benefit of being in the Rugby East, Despite being on the business end of some big defeats in the conference, Buffalo was still able to visit a former Empire Conference rival and beat them by 84 points.

"We are making progress," he said.
