Krewe Wins Meeting of Undefeateds in Florida

The Tampa Krewe sit all alone atop the Florida Youth Rugby Boys DI HS league after edging the previously-unbeaten Jupiter Sharks 17-14 on Saturday.

The game was an exciting one, with two evenly-matched teams, and it all came down to a late penalty attempt for the Krewe.

Both the Sharks and Krewe entered the game at 4-0, and played like it. Krewe Head Coach Chris DeAnnuntis was quick to point out that Jupiter's regular goalkicker was out injured, but that didn't stop the Sharks from converting both of their tries.

The Krewe scored first for a 7-0 lead, and right from the restart the Sharks replied, with captain Kyle Edington going over, and Shane Merrell converting.

The two teams battled it out throughout the match, and remained deadlocked at 7-7 until a breakaway try from Tampa put the Krewe up 14-7. Again, Jupiter answered immediately, marching down the field to put Trevor Brueningsen over. Merrell's conversion made it 14-14.

So down to the final moments. Tampa put on the pressure, and about 30 meters out got a penalty, which Stephen Walters put over for the winner.

Jupiter Coach Chris Oosthuizen said his team was missing a couple of players and their lack of depth was exposed.

"But we'll learn from this, take it on the chin, and move on," said the Sharks' coach.

"It was a very close game," added the reticent DeAnnuntis, "as it should have been."

Meanwhile, Riviera Beach Maritime Academy and Okpai Wanderers played to a 27-27 tie. RBMA ran out to a 22-5 lead, only to see Okapi come back in the second half to tie it. Orlando shut out the Cape Pirates 22-0 in a key game for Orlando.

While all of the Florida results are not in, the ones that are paint an interesting picture in the standings. Tampa is clear in 1st with a 5-0 record and 20 points in the standings. Jupiter slips behind Orlando on points difference, and then behind them is RBMA. Okapi sits at 5th but has a game in hand over the top four teams. The top four make the state semifinals, so while we're only about halfway through the season, it's clear there will be plenty of competition for those four spots.
