Kentucky Edges Plucky Citadel to Win Furman 7s

The Kentucky players celebrate winning the Furman 7s.

The University of Kentucky beat the Citadel 12-10 in the final of the Furman Invitational 7s to take the tournament.

The trophies all ended up in DI team hands in a tournament that mixed DI and DII teams. South Carolina won the Plate final 26-7 over UNC Chapel Hill, and Georgia beat Furman 31-19 for the Bowl.

Kentucky Head Coach Gary Anderson said an improvement in the weather helped his team prepare as they were able to get outside to train leading up to the tournament.

"I thought we were extremely patient in pool play working the corners and probing  the middle when opportunities presented themselves," said Anderson. "This led to us going 3-0 and not giving up a score. In the semifinals we got a little sloppy, but secured the victory."

The final was a difficult one against a Citadel team that deserves a plenty of praise for making the final and almost winning—the deficit was two points.

"Those boys clearly hit the gym and work the cardio," said Anderson. "They were not scared to pound it up and force us into double tackle situations this led to Citadel making probably one of the most impressive tries of the day. In the end we got the breaks we needed and came out with the championship."

The Rademacher brothers Zach and Isaiah we're the backbone of the team while the defense of freshman Everett Marret and sophomore Wyatt Kelley's were crucial in the final.
