HS Rugby Around the Nation

Rigby leads in Idaho.

Here's a look at Boys HS Rugby around the country.

Scores from the Wekeend of April 13-16

Massachusetts

The MIAA saw a big game between defending champs Milton HS and BC High. BC High took this one 22-7 and that puts BC High at the top for now.

Texas

Woodlands put down a statement win with a 47-0 shutout of St. Thomas. Woodlands and West Houston have been battling for the top spot in the Texas D1 South. West Houston is not eligible for the postseason because of a charge of using ineligible players last season. But West Houston is playing the regular season and have beaten Strake Jesuit, Cy-Fair, and St. Pius X by a total score of 140-12. Woodlands have beaten Strake, Cy-Fair, and St. Thomas by a total score of 176-8. Next up Woodlands plays St Pius X and West Houston plays St. Thomas. The two have already played each other, with West Houston winning 17-12.

St. Thomas is also due to play Dallas Jesuit, which sits 5-1 in Texas North/Central D1, their only loss being against St. Pius X.

Indiana

A couple of teams we haven't seen in a while are back in action. Pendleton defeated Westfield 46-17 in a game that was much closer early on. It was 12-10 at halftime.

Senior captain Will Kaster scored the opening try for Pendleton and then added another five minutes later. Nick Trout's conversion made it 12-0 before Westfield scored two unconverted tries later in the first half.

Trout kicked a penalty goal to make it 15-10 in the second half, and then things opened up. Clifton VanDuyn scored on an electric run, set up by Crew Boles. As they did in the first half, Westfield answered with a smooth play off the scrum near center. The Westfield conversion carried and the game drew to a three point margin at 20-17.

Capitalizing once again on a Westfield penalty, Trout attempted a kick pass to Justin Beeler that fell short, but Beeler was able to pass off to Boles who found Trout, and Trout lobbed a lengthy pass to speedster Gavin Busby to connect with Eli Arthur for a dynamic try.

A quick tap sent Derek Lowder rumbling through for another Pendleton try. Trout scored after that and Boles charged over for the last one to make it 46-17.

Next up for Pendleton is Carmel. They played Penn HS this past week and Penn won that 34-0. It has been a few weeks since Penn was on the field so the win, and the shutout, was impressive.

The Avon Black Swarm has been in action, too, shutting out Noblesville 59-0 behind a big day from the scrumhalf-flyhalf combo of Joey Jacobs and Gage Poland, and wing Dailon Ziegler featuring heavily in the attack. Avon backed that up with a 49-5 defeat of the Louisville Crash. Poland again starred as did wing Sean Gaston. Prop Ty Mead set the tone up front.

Ohio

Top-ranked school team St. Ignatius ran out their A-side against Grandville out of Michigan and won by over 100. Two Ignatius teams of defeated Detroit Central Catholic and the Toledo Celts, and a combined development/JV side beat Grandville's B side. It was a fairly startling display of the Wildcats' depth. Olentangy has been logging some solid results and a 14-12 defeat of Hilliard kept that up. Warrior Rugby beat Dublin 17-7 as Warrior keeps winning.

Illinois

Glen Ellyn looks to be one of the stronger teams in the Land of Lincoln and they won again. Neuqua beat South Suburban—Neuqua Takes Care of South Suburban in the Mud—and two younger brothers of recent or current college standouts, Matt Chevalier (Will at Indiana) and Michael Backe (Joey at Western Michigan) helped lead the way.

Kansas/Missouri

The classic rivalry match between St. Thomas Aquinas  and KC Jr. Blues went the way of Aquinas 62-12. This scoreline is a strong indication of how powerful Aquinas is this year and also how depth issues have hurt KC. In addition, KC's Coach, Casey Cummings, was injured plying a rugby game of his own—here are hopes for a quick recovery for him.

Virginia

Another rivalry is Vienna vs Fort Hunt and on Saturday Vienna beat Fort Hunt for the first time ever, taking the clash 33-5. The result of that game is that Vienna has guaranteed a spot in the Boys HS Rugby National Championships.

Richmond beat West End 49-0 in a game that was delayed by lightning. No. 8 Rudi Russell scored three tries and hooker Ewan Cross got two. The lightning delay of one hour didn't really half Richmond as they saw flanker Max Buono and wing Cal Tully run in—Buono's effort was off a 20-meter maul. Richmond led 30-0 at halftime and cruised from tghere. The Strikers have lost only once so far, to Fort Hunt, with victories over Roswell, Gonzaga Black, Raleigh Rattlesnakes, and a tie with Cape Fear.

they have the Charlotte Tigers and Vienno on the horizon.

Northern California

Xavier of New York is on tour in California and beat East Palo Alto 45-24 with Lennie Mannino scoring three tries for the tourists. Northern California had a busy and interesting weekend of games, the most interesting of which was probably SFGG almost beating De La Salle—the score was 21-19. De La Salle Holds Off SFGG in Tense NorCal Encounter. Xavier's Bs play SFGG's Bs Tuesday (today) and then Xavier takes on Jesuit later this week.

Danville beat Marin and, perhaps most notably, San Mateo beat Lamorinda 60-0. The Wolverines play mostly a D2 schedule but they've been winning those games by massive amounts.

Southern California

The big result here was the San Diego Mustangs defeating the SOC Raptors. The Mustangs are now 3-1 and have only lost to Belmont Shore. Shore was playing 7s at the Tropical 7s. Thunder won easily, . Next up is San Diego vs Thunder,

Colorado

Regis Jesuit put in an impressive showing, beating Valor 21-7. Valor's penalty trouble dug them a 7-0 hole in the first half and that doubled early in the second. Valor inched back with a try from flyhalf Zach Maughan on a chip-and-chase and had chances to tie it up but Regis held them out.

Ryan Paul was player of the game for Regis Jesuit with Luke Ford, Jayden Franklin, and Alexander Plank scored tries for the victors.

NCOS Falcons beat East HS.

In CIRA action, Monarch edged Palmer in a game where the Terrors perhaps surprised in how close they made it.

Iowa

Waverly Shell Rock and CR Washington both won twice in 7s action in Iowa to remain undefeated. As expected, CR Washington had a tough time with SE Polk, but emerged 21-14 winners. Next week CR Washington, now 6-0, takes on 5-1 Ankeny and 6-0 Waverly Shell Rock. Those games will be massive.

Still Tight at the Top in Iowa HS 7s

Idaho

Things have shifted a bit in Idaho with some of the teams that have annually been the contenders making way for others. Rigby and Owyhee have looked strong and they faced off this past weekend. Owyhee, with many players and coaches from the Rocky Mountain team after a school district division, seemed to be in front but Rigby edged Owyhee 32-27 over the weekend.

"I can’t say enough good things about Owyhee," said Rigby Head Coach Chet Blasucci. "From their coaches and administrators, to the players and fans ... they are a well-coached and a top-notch high school program. The culture they have created will keep them at the top for a while."

But Rigby did beat them thanks in large part to their experience and leadership. Rigby was started as a middle school program and this year's seniors are from that first class of middle schoolers. The front row of Nic Fanguupo, Kannon Koster, and Ty Byington set the platform and flanker Kicker Telford has been outstanding. They have allowed a backline led by flyhalf Nakeadon Foster, center Zeke Falavai, and fulback Tiger Adolpho.

"It has been fun to watch this team grow and develop over the last few years and too watch their hard work and dedication pay off this year," said Blasucci. "We have great volunteer coaches, a lot of fresh new talent that has adapted quickly ... and great senior leadership."

Rigby is now 4-0 in Idaho.

Oregon

Eastside and Camas lead the way in Oregon and won games they were expected to win. These two teams don't meet until May 7.

Utah

Cam Connors scored three tries while Caden Syddall and Dom Martucci each had two as Herriman beat Mountain Ridge 64-14. This game was only 19-14 at halftime but part of that was because Herriman had too many turnovers. MOuntain Ridge HS grew ouot of the Herriman school district, so players and coaches used to be part of Herriman before the new school was opened. So this was a rivalry from the jump. In the second half Herriman settled down and scored 45 unanswered points.

Snow Canyon held off Layton Christian 39-38 in what was the last home game for Snow Canyon Head Coach Michael Puriri, who is retiring after this season. It was a sterling team effort that saw Snow Canyon (also playing under the moniker Te Mana) to come back from 38-27 down with 10 minutes to go. A try and conversion by flyhalf Ben Beckstrand with less than a minute to go and then with time up Snow Canyon punished a couple of Layton penalties and outside center Ian Becker cut his way through to score the game-winner.

Layton Christian, led by the talented scrumhalf Eli Tagidugu, has been building something impressive.

"Our lineouts and scrums are good," said Head Coach Tongia Vaitaki, "but we missed some opportunities."

Two almost-tries went begging as Layton lost the ball at the tryline.

"We played well at times but overall we have room to improve," said Vaitaki. "They are little minor fixes."

Snow Canyon finishes regular season play at Genesis Saturday while Layton Christian plays United, who won big over West HS.
