Hartford, CGA, Leading NEWCRC Pack

Hartford is 5-0, and has Coast Guard in two weeks.

Hartford and Coast Guard both won big, setting up a likely all-marbles clash in two weeks in the New England Wide Conference.

Coast Guard ran out to a 43-7 halftime lead over Quinnipiac and cruised to a 69-7 win.

New Blue opened the match with a try and conversion in the first 7 minutes after CGA missed a tackle in the midfield. The make matters worse for the Coast Guard team, a high tackle as the ball was being touched down meant a yellow card and being down a man for the next tean minutes.

However, strong defense and set piece play - Coast Guard ruled in the scrums - set the tone for the remainder of the day. Flanker Stephan Meboung and center Tyler Carlsgaard were outstanding in defense and Brendan Stephany a handful from fullback on attack. Carlsgaard also scored four tries while Meboung added two. Stephany added 17 points on kicks.

Hartford slammed Central Connecticut State 53-5 to keep pace with Coast Guard at 5-0. Coast Guard leads the conference thanks to more bonus points.

Hartford Head Coach Ryan Ginty said his team has put in some gutsy performances, with some freshman stepping into key roles. Flanker Demetrius Lopez has been a nice find for the team.

"I am happy with the boys," said Ginty. "But we all know there are tough games left this season and we've got to take it one step at a time. There was some hesitation from some coaches in our league about letting a strong team like Coast Guard into our conference. I was all for it. They're a strong team and if you want to compete in the playoffs, you're going to have to win against tough competition. We're glad to have them in the NEWCRC."

Springfield beat Westfield 26-7 on Sunday to move to 2-2. WSCU won by forfeit over WPI.
