Haitian Rugby Group Runs Rugby Camp: Help Them

the second rugby camp in Haiti, like the first, is focused on values and life skills.

Rugby enthusiasts in Haiti are kicking off their second rugby camp in the nation's capital of Port-au-Prince.

Quisqueya Rugbi and volunteers from Helping Hands Noramise and Roots Rugby are working to build grassroots rugby in Haiti and will hold this camp May 6-8 at the Centre Sport pour L'Espoir.

"This is our second camp and we focus on teaching the values of rugby as well as skills," said Rosedanie Cadet, who has also coached college, club, and HS rugby in Colorado and Washington. "For our last clinic, we gave out value-based—respect, integrity, discipline, teamwork— awards rather than those based on athletic ability. As these skills will serve the youths for their lives on and off the field of play."

It's the character of the game, added Cadet, that will make the kids into contributing adults. Those values, she said. are what "Haitian youths need to develop in order to address the many issues plaguing the country."

About 59% of Haitians live below the poverty line, with 24% living in extreme poverty. Natural disasters have contributed to that problem, with an earthquake in 2010 and Hurrican Matthew in 2016 the most obvious culprits.

To put on this clinic, Quisqueya Rugbi needs help with funds. All funds raised will go to covering basic on-site accommodation at the Olympic Center, as well as program materials and meals for the kids.
