GRR HS School Team Rankings Final for 2022-2023

Gonzaga stays #1 for all but two weeks this season. Kate McAuliffe photo.

We have come to the final school-team rankings of the 2022-2023 season.

We waited a couple of weeks to post these final rankings because there were a few results here and there to track, but not so many that it was worth torturing you all with a ranking where 98% of the teams didn't move.

As a result, however, we do have some drastic movers and here's why:

1. Edina finally confirmed a body of work and deserved to be in the top 50.

2. Pelham beat Rye in the New York playoffs and as a result Rye moved down and Pelham moved up. We wanted to see how far Pelham might move up based on their result against Xavier, but Xavier won comfortably so we're happy with a 19-place bump but no more.

3. Fairfield Prep beat Greenwich. Now this was a tough one for us. We like to rank teams based on performance within their state and also outside. Fairfield did play some out-of-state teams, but not too many especially strong ones. However, Greenwich did. Fairfield and Greenwich split their games this year, and since the Fairfield win was the state final, we feel we should move them up to #8. To be honest, we're not super psyched about it. Games against Aspetuck, or Xavier, or Belmont, or Rye, or Pelham would have made us feel a lot better about it. In the end we can't find a reason not to have Fairfield at #8, but we're watching carefully. If Fairfield Prep wants to be considered in the upper echelon in the future they can't rely on one or two results.

But, says the reader, what about Torrey Pines? Torrey Pines didn't play after early March and didn't play out of their region, you say. OK, largely true except they did play St. Francis from Northern California and have hosted touring teams in the past. In the end for us TP gts a small boost from the San Diego Mustangs because that club has so many Torrey Pines players on it. And we are relying somewhat on the overall strength of the Southern California teams, schools and clubs, to lead us in that.

Utah is one league where we often don't really require too much playing outside of the region. East HS stays at #7. They could be lower, but we watched them several times and we don't think so. Belmont High is another that basically stayed within their state, but given that others teams in that region and how well Belmont played, and given how we saw video or in person pretty much all of the teams ranked #10-#25, we do feel they deserve that #18 spot.

Rockford wins Michigan and moves into the Top 50. They opened their season playing at Nash Bash and losing games. And we, perhaps unkindly, turned our back on them after that. Really, they were trying to play outside and they were competitive with quite good teams. We weren't happy to see them in the JV bracket of the Midwest Championships and really couldn't tell if they were good or not in the lower bracket. But, again, maybe we were making assumptions.

Dublin's run to the Ohio D1 school championship was a good one and in the end their only losses were to strong club teams.

So here it is. Thank you to everyone for your help in these rankings. Don't forget to help support us. You can go here to find out how to help us do what we do>>
