Grils HSAA 2nd in Tropical 7s

The Girls HS All Americans, powered by Atavus, fell to Canada's Maple Leafs U18s in the final of the Tropical 7s International Youth Sevens Saturday in Orlando, Fla.

The HSAA team played in a small but competitive Girls u18 bracket with Canada, The Fort Lauderdale Ruckus Riptide, Indiana River, KIngwood, and the Riptide's 2nd team.

In Pool Play on Firday, the GHSAA Atavus team shut out Kingwood 52-0, and the Riptide I team 62-0. But Canada defeated them 29-10. On Saturday, the GHSAA won with two more shutouts, 56-0 over Riptide II, and 62-0 over Indiana River.

Canada U18s logged similar results, not giving up a point except to the HS All Americans.

That set up a final, and it was a tight one, with the Maple Leafs edging the GHSAA team 17-12. The Riptide defeated Indian River 19-5 to take 3rd, while Kingwood held off the Riptide II team 17-15 for 5th.

This was a very useful warmup for the European U18 7s Championships coming up this summer.

"As we look to return to Vichy, France, for the European 7s Championships and begin to think about the preparation for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, we see this tournament as a development opportunity," Head Coach Farrah Douglas told USARugby.org. "We have selected some of our younger players from the France series, such as team captains Julia Riekena and Cassidy Bargell, to challenge them in becoming strong team leaders and push their understanding around how we want to strategically play sevens. We also see this event as an opportunity to provide some of the newer players to our sevens program experience within our system of play to prepare them for potential selection for France."
