Good Counsel gave Gonzaga a push in the Mid-Atlantic Varsity Rugby final, ultimately going down 26-19 on Saturday.

The teams were tied 12-12 at halftime, with Good Counsel flyhalf and captain Leo Fangmeyer having a particularly strong game. But Gonzaga's superior depth (even as the Eagles rested a couple of starters) was too much.

Two second-half tries put Gonzaga in the league, and while Good Counsel scored a try late, it wasn't enough.

"Good Counsel is a very good team," said Gonzaga Head Coach Peter Baggetta, who praised Good Counsel Coach James Aitken, who used to coach as Gonzaga. "They are well-coached and well-prepared.  They get wrestlers after the wrestling season and they've got one of the top wrestling programs in the region."

Baggetta said he would rate Good Counsel very highly.

Last week, Good Counsel edged Georgetown Prep 17-14 in the semis, while Gonzaga slammed Landon 61-10.
